For people living with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, annual eye screening is an effective way of preventing sight loss caused by diabetes because symptoms do not present until patients reach an advanced stage of diabetic retinopathy.
“Some people with diabetes do not understand or are not aware of the risks of developing diabetic retinopathy - a condition that causes changes in the blood vessels of the retina, which in turn can lead to blindness.
By attending regular eye screening appointments, patients can dramatically reduce their risk of developing the condition because treatment can be provided at the right time.
I hope this campaign encourages all patients to attend their appointments – particularly those who have previously been invited and haven’t attended. The whole procedure takes, on average, just 30-40 minutes and is free on the NHS.
Please don’t delay, make your appointment today.”
From 10 May 2021, NHS England and NHS Improvement (East of England) and the Essex Diabetes Eye Screening Programme are launching the Essex Diabetes Eye Screening campaign.
The campaign will educate people with diabetes about the risks of developing diabetic retinopathy, remind them that the Essex Diabetes Eye Screening Programme is still here to help and they should always attend their appointments, and that services have been adapted in order to see them safely. The programme also offers reasonable adjustments to ensure the programme is accessible to everyone and has introduced a range of measures to ensure the health, safety and wellbeing of all patients attending eye screening is an absolute priority.
To ensure the campaign reaches the right audiences, a brand-new film has been created featuring iconic Essex locations and real-life stories from patients who have experienced sight loss, having missed regular screening. The film is available in long format along with three shortened, targeted audience films for use on social media.
